Crop monitoring increasingly depends on more than a flat image. Plant height, canopy volume, biomass, row structure, and fruit position are three-dimensional measurements - and they need consistent, geometrically accurate depth data, captured the same way every pass, every season.

The FRAMOS Depth Camera D435e brings industrial 3D depth sensing to the field and greenhouse. Built with Intel RealSense technology, it pairs global shutter depth and RGB with an IP66-rated housing and rugged M12 Ethernet - delivering reliable close-range depth for ground robots, gantries, and phenotyping systems in harsh growing environments.

Flat images guess at plant size - depth measures it

A 2D camera sees leaf colour and area, but it cannot tell a tall, healthy plant from a short, stressed one at the same canopy cover. The D435e captures true 3D structure - height, volume, and spacing - so crop models measure biomass and growth directly instead of inferring it. Global shutter keeps that geometry stable even as a robot or gantry moves through the row.

2D detection: finds the fruit, not the position
A flat image can spot and count ripe fruit, but it carries no depth. Overlapping and partly hidden fruit collapse into a single blob, and the camera can only estimate how far away each one is. A robot arm handed a 2D box knows what to pick but not where it sits in space - so it reaches short, overshoots, or bruises the crop.
3D depth with the D435e: every fruit placed in space
The FRAMOS D435e stereo depth camera returns a true X/Y/Z position and distance for each fruit, and recovers fruit tucked behind leaves and stems. The robot receives an exact pick point and approach path - so it reaches the right fruit, at the right distance, the first time. Global shutter keeps that geometry stable while the arm and the plants are moving.
