The Spresense 5MP Camera Board is a compact imaging solution with a 5.11 MP Sony CMOS sensor, ideal for IoT and embedded systems.

Description

The Spresense mainboard, camera board, and extension board are now available as a complete package, offering an all-in-one solution for embedded vision and IoT applications. This package brings together three essential components, each tailored for different functionalities, and combines them for seamless integration and enhanced performance.

The compact 5MP camera board features a high-quality Sony CMOS sensor with a 5.11MP resolution of 2608 (H) x 1960 (V). The camera module is designed for precision imaging, offering rich color depth and crisp visuals. The board itself measures a minimal 24.0mm x 25.0mm, making it ideal for space-constrained applications. It connects directly to the Spresense main board via a ribbon cable, supporting video output in Y/C, RGB RAW, and JPEG formats through an 8-bit parallel data interface. Control and command functions are handled through an I2C bus, ensuring reliable communication. This camera module also includes a built-in fixed-focus lens with a 78° field of view (FOV), f/2.0 aperture, and an integrated IR-cut filter to improve color accuracy in various lighting conditions.

The extension board is designed to expand the capabilities of the Spresense platform, connecting seamlessly with the CXD5602PWBMAIN1 main board. It features Arduino Shield-compatible connectors, making it versatile for prototyping and development. Additionally, the extension board includes an SD card slot for external storage, a headphone jack for audio output, and multiple I/O options for various peripherals. It supports:

  • Audio input/output: 8-channel digital mic input or 4-channel analog mic input, headphone output
  • Digital I/O: 3.3 V or 5 V logic level support
  • Analog input: 6 channels with a 5.0 V range
  • External memory: microSD card slot for expanded storage capacity

The main board is the core of the Spresense platform, powered by dual Sony processors: the CXD5247GF and CXD5602GG. These processors offer advanced processing capabilities for AI, vision, and audio applications. The board also includes an on-board GPS chip antenna, providing location tracking without the need for additional components. It features a camera interface, a USB-based debug interface, and a 26-pin extension connector for further hardware integration.

To enhance the Spresense platform, several add-ons can be purchased separately or developed to expand functionality, including LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth (BT/BTE), and additional image sensors, making the platform adaptable for a wide range of use cases in industrial, IoT, and embedded systems.
